HLF bid submitted

October 3, 2014

Teignbridge has submitted the bid.

Such a brief sentence to cover such a lot of research, investigation, planning, worrying, inspections and reporting by consultants, and all manner of events to encourage even more people to come and enjoy the gardens.

On 2nd October Lorraine and Jane from Teignbridge accompanied the Grant Officer, the Conservation Architect and an HLF Committee Member on a tour of the gardens, followed by a review of photographic evidence and a question and answer session back at the Council offices. All very friendly and comfortable with every opportunity to put our case with clarity and enthusiasm. Now all we can do is wait …

Change to charitable status

October 3, 2014

The Gardens began life as Homeyards Botanical Gardens and are still known that way by Teignbridge. Much more recently when the Friends group was formed they chose to be Friends of Shaldon Botanical Gardens. Now we are pursuing a Heritage Lottery appeal which is finally coming towards a conclusion, and a change this year in charity law, means it is becoming necessary for us to register as a new Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). This will give us access to numerous possible funding streams required as matched funding by the Lottery bid.

On the 8th September 2014 we had a special public meeting to ask approval for the change in status and choose founding trustees. The meeting of dedicated Botanicals willingly agreed to become a CIO with Lisa Pash, Richard Brett and Alison Melville-Shreeve as an excellent team of trustees.

After a lot of research, a Lottery application, a change of law and about 80 years, we are applying for charitable status in the full name of the Friends of Homeyards Botanical Gardens in Shaldon. This will take effect in just 40 days time.
